About Kanpur


Kanpur is located on the banks of the river Ganga with an area of over 1600 kmĀ² Kanpur nestles on the banks of Ganga. Kanpur as a city of its own has got religious, commercial and historical importance. Kanpur was earlier known as Kanhpur and is believed to be founded by king Hindu Singh of the erstwhile state of Sachendi. The city was a common suburb until the 1st half of 18th century. However, Kanpur later on happened to change a lot over the years.

In May 1765, Shuja-ud-daula, the  Nawab  Wazir  of   Awadh, was defeated by the British near Jajmau and started establishing their business in Kanpur. `Awadh local forces' were shifted here in 1778 to ensure protection to their lives  and  property. Under the treaty of 1801 with Nawab  Saadat  Ali Khan of Awadh Kanpurpassed into British hands. And this gave a turning point in the history of KanpurKanpur soon became the military station of British India.

Jajmau
The mound of Jajmau lies on the eastern end of the city is considered as one of the most ancient sites of this region. During 1957 - 1958 excavations of the mound were undertaken which unearthed antiquities of 600 BC to 1600 AD. Jajmau is considered to have been the kingdom of Yayati.

You can visit the Siddhnath and Siddha Devi temples and the mousoleium of Makhdum Shah Ala-ul-Haq, the famous Sufi saint, built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq in 1358 in Jajmau. You can also visit the mosque built by Kulich Khan.

Allen Forest Zoo
This is the most visited Zoological Parks of India. Visitors to Kanpur must make a visit to the Allen Forest Zoo to see the most diverse types of fauna and flora.Also known as Kanpur Zoo, Allen Forest Zoo was opened in 1971. The surroundings of the zoo incorporate ample picturesque landscapes and is an ideal place for picnics.

Shri Radhakrishna Temple (J.K. Temple)
Radhakrishna Temple is an architectural masterpiece built by J. K Trust. The temple boasts a perfect medley of modern and ancient architecture.The multi-strata roofs of the building is provided with enough ventilation for light and air. The four shrines of the temples are decked with idols of Shri Laxminarayan, Shri. Ardhanarishwar, Shri Narmadeshwar and Shri Hanuman and the central one is devoted to Shri Radhakrishna.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is one of the most prestigious institutes of Technology. IIT Kanpurwas set up in the year 1960 in the city ofKanpur. The education is primarily based on engineering technology. Lots of research works are carried out in the institute.

Kamla Retreat
